Seventeen Syllables

I started writing haiku in 2009 as a fun diversion when a colleague launched a Hump Day Haiku challenge on her Facebook page. I have been a regular contributor and decided to archive some of my haiku. It's amazing what you can create with just three lines totaling 17 syllables - 5-7-5. I have since started reading haiku by other writers in seeking further inspiration. I marvel at the creativity and depth of meaning that you can convey in this tightly confined poetry format.

In creating this Seventeen Syllables blog, I want to challenge myself to use economy of words to express simple joy, silly thoughts and on occasion, deeper observations of life, love, relationships and journeys.

If you have never tried writing haiku, it's simple. Just pick up a pencil and paper (don't stare at the blank screen) and start to play with phrases. You'll be amazed at what you can create. On those nights that sleep eludes, keep a pad of paper and pencil at your bedside and jot down phrases that can evolve into haikus.

I have not been active on the blog for a few years, but am gearing up once again.
